Hannah Einbinder Slams ICE After Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy Win

Hannah Einbinder took home her first Emmy on Sunday for best supporting actress in a comedy series for her role in Hacks at the 2025 awards ceremony.

After being presented the award by Reba McEntire and Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman, Einbinder took to the stage, where she said it’s “punk rock” to win an Emmy.

“Thank you so much, wow! I’m thinking out loud here — I was just really committed to the personal narrative that I have that it was actually cooler to continue to lose. I was pretty committed to that, had to be, right? But this is cool too. This is also punk rock!” she said in her acceptance speech.

An emotional Einbinder also showed her appreciation to the creators of Hacks, Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky, for “changing my life in every conceivable way, but not just by giving me a great gig, but by being my friends and being my family.”

“And I wanna thank Jean Smart, who is like the sun and I just get to stand in her warmth,” she continued, “and I also wanna thank the cast and crew of Hacks.”

At the end of her speech, Einbinder added, “I just wanna say, finally, go birds, fuck ICE and free Palestine.”

Later, in the press room backstage, she explained that she wanted to speak about Palestine and the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip “because it’s an issue that’s very close to my heart.”

“I have friends in Gaza who are working as frontline workers, as doctors, right now in the north of Gaza to provide care for pregnant women and for school children to create schools in refugee camps,” Einbinder continued. “I feel like it’s my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the state of Israel because our religion and our culture is such an important and longstanding institution that is really separate to this really ethnonationalist state.”

The actress also explained why she chose to sign the Film Workers for Palestine pledge to boycott working with Israeli film institutions and companies that are “implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.”

“It’s like many movements — boycotting is an effective tool to create pressure on the powers that be to meet the moment. The Film Workers for Palestine boycott does not boycott individuals, it only boycotts institutions that are directly complicit in the genocide. So it’s important to me and I think it’s an important measure and I was happy to be a part of it,” Einbinder added.

Einbinder plays Ava Daniels in Hacks, which explores the ongoing dynamic between her young comedy writer and veteran Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart).

Other nominees in the supporting actress in a comedy series category included Liza Colón-Zayas for The Bear, Kathryn Hahn for The Studio, Janelle James for Abbott Elementary, Catherine O’Hara for The Studio, Sheryl Lee Ralph for Abbott Elementary and Jessica Williams for Shrinking.

As for Hacks, it earned 14 Emmy nominations total this year, including for best comedy series and best actress in a comedy series for Smart (which she won), among others.

The 77th Emmy Awards, hosted by Nate Bargatze, aired live from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 14. Check out all the red carpet arrivals and 2025 Emmy winners.
