Infectious Updates 9/14/2025

DR Congo declares another Ebola outbreak.  More details emerge.  Suspected cases have risen to 68,  and more regions are involved.  This is a new zoonotic spillover, not related to previous outbreaks.

Mpox Continues to be a problem for Africa, as the rest of the world winds down its health emergency.  Also, cholera is a severe problem.

A previously stored sample from a CA dairy herd tested positive for H5N1, but no new detections have occurred in cattle in the last 30 days.  A turkey farm has been hit, the second recent detection in South Dakota.  Avian flu may infect the gut, though the risk is considered low.  Seems clear to me that pets infected by raw foods got it that way, not by breathing it.

In related developments, a multisector group made up of experts in poultry, public health, science, and policy is meeting for the first time this week in Brazil to address the escalating avian flu threat to animal health, human health, and livelihoods, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization said today. The group called the response unprecedented.

Avian flu is now a global challenge, not a sporadic threat, Beth Bechdol, MS, the FAO’s deputy director-general, said in a statement, “No single country or sector can tackle this threat in isolation—and failure is not an option. Practical, science-based collaboration like this is essential to protect our agrifood systems, livelihoods, and public health.”

One of the OTHER bird flus is still causing human cases In China

There was measles exposure At a large cycling event in Utah.

A sad reminder that measles can kill years later: an LA child Who caught measles as an infant has died of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, a rare and fatal sequel of measles that occurs 10 or more years after the original infection.

States are stepping up To secure vaccine access for their citizens

New studies show just how prevalent long Covid is.  To be avoided if at all possible.

And you might give Covid to your dog, who really doesn’t deserve it either.

Healthy full term infants are also at risk of severe RSV illness, highlighting the need for maternal and infant vaccination.

Salmonella in delivered meals:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has posted a notice about a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak linked to meals from Metabolic Meals, a home delivery company. So far, at least 16 people in 10 states have been sickened, with 7 people requiring hospitalization. No deaths have been reported.

In the odd diseases corner we have N. meningitidis eye infections on a military base.

And Boreal pox in Alaska, which is spread from rodents.

Multidrug resistant Candidiasis in European hospitals

And Jamestown Canyon virus, first human case In Vermont.  No, I never heard of it before either.  It’s spread by mosquitoes.

The voluntary recall of some DermaRite products has expanded, due to Burkholderia contamination.

Infectious Information is a DK group for collecting diaries on all things infectious, both basic educational material and breaking news updates.

Given the precarious state of public health agencies under the Orange Menace, it is my hope that the information itself can be infectious, spread widely to all your contacts, in the hope of promoting self-defense from disease. Knowledge is the best inoculation against misinformation!
