The conclusion to Square Enix’s epic and ongoing Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga will not be a PS5 exclusive.
The Japanese publisher has been foreshadowing this for quite some time, but it confirmed on social media that the third instalment will launch simultaneously on PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The first game in the saga was famously announced as a PS4 console exclusive, where it released in 2020. It was later ported to the PS5 and PC in 2021, and will eventually deploy on Xbox Series X|S and on Switch 2 on 22nd January, 2026.
The sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, launched in 2024 as a PS5 exclusive, and was ported to the PC earlier this year.
Square Enix has reiterated on various occasions that it wasn’t satisfied with the sales of the sequel, which has sparked its multiformat push.
To be fair, this seems to extend to its entire library, as games like Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined – announced earlier today – have also been revealed for everything.
It’ll be interesting to see how the addition of more platforms affects the series’ fortunes. Clearly, it’ll be reaching a larger audience than it would have done as a PlayStation exclusive, but it’s still asking a lot of consumers to show up for the third entry in a remake saga.
There’s no word on when the concluding chapter will release by the way, or any assets or screenshots. But in a recent livestream, Square Enix said that the project has been progressing well.
