Prince Harry Reportedly Agreed To Keep King Charles Meeting Private

Prince Harry is on a mission to make sure the royal family feud is a thing of the past.

On Sept. 10, the Duke of Sussex and King Charles III shared their first moment together after 19 months apart. The Daily Mail reported that it was a 54-minute meeting over a cup of tea at Clarence House in London. They described it as a “rebuilding [of] their father-and-son relationship.” The visit was a huge improvement over Harry’s allotted 15-minute audience with Charles after his cancer diagnosis in February 2024.

Still, there were ground rules to yesterday’s reunion. “He has told his father he won’t be giving any interviews about it and his team have been instructed not to brief journalists about what was said,” a palace insider told the U.K. publication. “There’s a long way to go before Harry can earn his family’s trust, but he’s given some assurances.”

Some of these assurances likely came out of July’s royal peace talks in London between the Sussexes’ chief communications officer, Meredith Maines, and their PR representative in the U.K., Liam Maguire, who met with the monarch’s communications secretary, Tobyn Andreae. The paparazzi documented the meeting, and Harry and Meghan Markle were reportedly “frustrated” that the secret talks were made public, per Page Six.

Harry seemed to take the first step in May when he spoke with the BBC about his wishes to heal the family wounds. “There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,” the Duke of Sussex said in May about Charles’ health battle. “I don’t know how much longer my father has.”

Even with Harry and Charles’ discretion over their reunion, there’s a lot of chatter about Prince William and his reluctance to speak with his younger brother. “William is done with Harry. When he becomes King, everybody thinks the divide will become even wider,” a royal source told Us Weekly in August.

Still, royal experts think William is making a mistake. Duncan Larcombe, the former royal editor for The Sun, told The Daily Beast in June 2022 that William “has to start showing some leadership” when it comes to brokering peace with Harry. “William has got a lot more to lose than Harry,” he explained. “The monarchy could be lost on his watch.”

With Harry and Charles moving forward peacefully behind closed doors, it’s time for William to follow in his father’s footsteps.
