Illumination and Nintendo have titled the animated Super Mario Bros. 2 movie as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
As earlier announced, the voice cast for the next instalment will include returning talent like Mario (Chris Pratt), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day), Bowser (Jack Black), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson). Additional voice cast members will be unveiled at a later date.
Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic were also earlier revealed to direct the sequel after they helmed the first Super Mario Bros Movie released 2023. The second tentpole from the Super Mario Bros. universe will be released by Universal Pictures on April 3, 2026 in the U.S. and other world markets. The animated pic will be released on April 24, 2026 in Japan, with select territories rolling out that month.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned over $1.3 billion worldwide. The original Super Mario Bros. Movie told the origin story of Mario (Chris Pratt) and his younger brother Luigi (Charlie Day), who began as plumbers in Brooklyn before being whisked away to the Mushroom Kingdom by way of a mysterious pipe. Keegan Michael-Key, Jack Black, Sebastian Maniscalco and Anya Taylor-Joy filled out the rest of the cast.
Both the 2023 film and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo. Co-directors Horvath and Jelenic and their team of animators have already begun work on storyboarding scenes and developing set designs for new environments.
The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and is directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, from a screenplay by returning screenwriter Matthew Fogel. Brian Tyler will return to compose the score.
