Shailene Woodley celebrates ‘Big Little Lies’ season 3 update: ‘So back’

The gang is getting back together and Shailene Woodley, for one, is celebrating.

Following news Thursday that Big Little Lies had been renewed for more bigger, littler lies, Woodley took to her Instagram Stories to express her excitement.

Next to a photo of her and costars Zoë Kravitz and Laura Dern promoting the show, Woodley wrote the caption, “We ARE so back… Big Little Lies 3, you ready???”

On a subsequent slide, Woodley once again shared a shot of her, Kravitz, and Dern in conversation together, and added the caption, “cause… it’s happening…”

Woodley, who starred in the first two seasons of the smash hit drama as Jane Chapman, shared her celebratory posts just hours after it was announced that the long-awaited third season was moving forward with new writer Francesca Sloane (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) on board. Per Deadline, Sloane is also set to executive produce the new installment with series creator David. E. Kelley and stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.

The first season of Big Little Lies, based on the 2014 Liane Moriarty novel of the same name, debuted on HBO in 2017 to much fanfare — the season would go on to win a whopping eight of its 16 Emmy nominations. A second season, which brought Meryl Streep into the fray, debuted in 2019.

Rumors of a potential third season of Big Little Lies have floated around since the second season concluded. However, conversations appeared to end after the death of the show’s original director, Jean-Marc Vallée, in December 2021.

Then, Kidman got fans’ tongues wagging in November 2023 when she said on stage at a golf event, “I loved Big Little Lies, because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children and I was thinking I was going to retire. And then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show and create that show. And then all of you watched it and made it a massive success… And we will be bringing you a third one, just FYI.”

Witherspoon later teased Kidman about the slip in a June 2024 joint interview with Vanity Fair. “Listen, this one already went somewhere and said too much,” Witherspoon teased, sitting next to her costar. “I get the ring-ring, ‘Hey, is that happening?’ Nic! You got excited.”

Laughing, Kidman admitted, “I got excited.”

“But we are now!” Kidman declared at the time. “We’re moving fast and furious, and Liane [Moriarty] is delivering the book. We’re in good shape.”

According to Deadline, the aforementioned sequel book is believed to be finished and targeting a 2026 release date, though it’s unclear when the new episodes can be expected.
