Henry Cavill‘s Highlander, which was set to go into principal photography this month, will now be pushed into 2026 after the actor sustained an injury during pre-production, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The type of injury was unclear, but the project had been putting the final pieces on its sprawling cast as it barrelled towards production in the coming weeks. It is now aiming to film at the top of next year.
Chad Stahelski is at the helm of the long-gestating project, which the filmmaker has been developing for nearly a decade. It spent years at Lionsgate before moving to Amazon MGM Studios.
The remake of the 1980s classic about immortal warriors also stars Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou and Max Zhang.
Cavill, 42, has been training for months for the project, teasing at CinemaCon in 2024: “If you think you’ve seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet.”
The original film starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, and spawned sequels and a TV series. The new film has a screenplay from John Wick: Chapter 4 scribe Michael Finch, and is produced by UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt alongside Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions and Louise Rosner.
Cavill, who rose to global fame playing Superman in Zack Snyder’s DC movies, is looking to Highlander to be a potential franchise starter.
