Ricky Gervais Making ‘Alley Cats’ Netflix Animation Starring Diane Morgan

Ricky Gervais is leading a crowd of feral cats in a new adult animated series for Netflix.

Gervais is behind Netflix’s Alley Cats, which stars a wealth of top British comics including Diane Morgan, Tom Basden and Kerry Godliman. Rounding out cast are Andrew Brooke, David Earl, Jo Hartley, Natalie Cassidy and Tony Way.

Launching next year and produced by Gervais’ Derek Productions with Blink Industries, the 6 x 15-minute series follows the trials and tribulations of a group of feral British cats who seek companionship while ruminating about the struggles of everyday life. The show is “packed with Gervais’ signature style of heart and social commentary,” Netflix said.

“I play a fat, lazy, rude, opinionated creature with fangs, who’s not as smart or brave as he thinks he is. So quite a stretch,” joked Gervais, who was also behind Netflix hit After Life.

The show represents Gervais’ return to the adult animation scene 13 years after the conclusion of HBO and Channel 4’s The Ricky Gervais Show, which was an animated version of the popular podcast from Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington using Hanna-Barbera-era cartoons.

Alley Cats comes in the week Netflix unveiled a new show from another prominent British creative, Charlie Brooker, who is making an untitled comedy detective series starring Paddy Considine and Lena Headey.

Gervais is exec producing Alley Cats alongside Steven Hamilton Shaw of Shush Creative. Blink Industries is providing animation. Tang Heng (Kung Fu Panda) is production designer. Elliot Dear is co-director with Gervais.
