James Gunn appeared on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio and said “we’re starting to shoot” the “Superman” sequel “Man of Tomorrow” in April 2026 or so. Warner Bros has already dated the comic book tentpole for July 9, 2027, which is essentially two years after the release of “Superman” on July 11 this summer.
“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” Gunn teased about his sequel for the first time. “It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I Just love the script so much.”
“Superman” successfully kicked off Gunn’s new DC Universe, which has since continued with “Peacemaker” Season 2 on HBO Max and will next include 2026 movies “Supergirl” (Gunn told Stern that leading lady Millie Alcock “might be the best bit of a casting I’ve ever done in my entire life. She is absolutely stunning in the movie”) and “Clayface,” plus next year’s HBO Max series “Lanterns.”
Gunn’s “Superman” introduced David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, both of whom are all but confirmed to return for “Man of Tomorrow” given Gunn’s plot tease to Stern. With $614 million at the worldwide box office, “Superman” is the year’s top-grossing comic book movie.
The director announced “Man of Tomorrow” on social media on Sept. 3. In his announcement, the writer-director included a comic book image of Superman standing next to Lex Luthor in his Warsuit. In the DC comics, Lex creates the suit in order match Superman’s strength and abilities. While the teaser image suggested Lex and Superman would be at odds again, it now appears Lex will be using his Warsuit so that he can be on the same level as Superman for whatever big threat comes their way.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav personally announced in August that Gunn would return to write and direct a follow-up to “Superman.”
