The 37-year-old singer and actress has risen to fame on Dancing with the Stars alongside her brother Derek Hough. While the two of them have had success in Hollywood, they have three older sisters who haven’t had the same level of success.
On the Tuesday (September 9) episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Julianne made a rare comment about her older sisters not becoming as famous as she and Derek did.
“My three older sisters, they all danced and sang and acted, and we were in a band,” Julianne said on the podcast.
She went on to explain that while she had one older sister who took the “Mormon” way by starting a family young, her other two sisters tried their hand at stardom. She said, “My second sister moved to Nashville to be a country star and my third sister wanted to be an actress.”
Julianne continued to say that although her older sisters aren’t jealous of her and Derek, they do wish they had been able to reach the same level of fame and success.
“There’s no jealousy, but there is, like, a sadness that maybe there wasn’t an opportunity for them to experience it. They’re so happy, so, so, so happy. And look, they have great lives, and they love their life. But, you know it’s a ‘what if.’ We had an opportunity that they didn’t have. Yeah. And it’s hard,” Julianne said on the podcast.
She also said that while being in the spotlight gave her and Derek something to bond over, it also caused some distance between herself and her sisters.
“That was one of my biggest things was Derek and I were always so close because we had shared experiences,” Julianne explained. “Whereas, like, we never wanted to share because we were afraid to hurt someone’s feelings, but that just grew us further and further apart. Because we weren’t sharing. They didn’t feel included.”
