NMDOH issues order allowing pharmacies to give new COVID vaccine

SANTA FE, N.M. – The New Mexico Department of Health issued an order allowing pharmacists to prescribe and give the new COVID vaccine using state guidelines.

According to NMDOH, they worked with pharmacies across the state on the guidelines but only named CVS Health. In a statement, CVS Health’s senior vice president said they will “ensure COVID-19 vaccinations are available as soon as possible at our pharmacies throughout the state.”

KOB 4 found pharmacists in New Mexico aren’t allowed to administer any vaccines not recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). However, the CDC’s ACIP didn’t review the new formula and hasn’t made a decision. Therefore, CVS and Walgreens weren’t allowing their New Mexico pharmacists to give the vaccine. This order changes that.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who oversees the CDC as the Secretary of Health and Human Services, has come under fire for his anti-vaccine rhetoric.

The new COVID vaccine is recommended for seniors and people at high risk for severe illness. However, anyone who wants it can get it.
