Metal Gear Solid 3 – Original vs Fox Engine Remake vs Unreal Engine 5 Remake

Now here is something cool. YouTube’s ‘Cycu1’ has shared a video in which he compares the original, Fox Engine Remake, and Unreal Engine 5 Remake of Metal Gear Solid 3. So, let’s take a look at it.

For those who did not know, Konami has remade a lot of the MGS3 cut-scenes in Fox Engine. But instead of a game, they used them for an MGS3 pachinko machine, which really upset fans. But hey, we at least got a faithful remake of MGS3, only this time Konami and Virtuos used Unreal Engine 5 and not the Fox Engine.

I should also note that the cut-scenes in the Unreal Engine 5 Remake are running in real-time. Those for the Fox Engine could be pre-rendered. So, this is something you should also keep in mind. This may not be an apples-to-apples comparison.

With this out of the way, let’s take a look at the video. The 3D models and the textures are significantly better in the Unreal Engine 5 Remake. However, the lighting and shadows are much better in the Fox Engine. The cut-scenes in the Fox Engine have a better art style. Hair physics are also better in the Fox Engine Remake.

As I said, I don’t know if these are pre-rendered cut-scenes. Still, the Fox Engine cut-scenes look much better than the ones in the Unreal Engine 5 Remake. You could even say they look a generation ahead.

Overall, this is a really cool video that a lot of MGS3 fans will find interesting. So, be sure to watch it.

Speaking of Metal Gear Solid 3, I suggest taking a look at these tweaks for the UE5 Remake. PC gamers can enable Hardware Lumen Ray Tracing, Ray Reconstruction, and Frame Generation on PC. Do note that you will need a high-end GPU to enable the first two features. As for Frame Gen, if you own an RTX-40 or RTX-50 series GPU, I suggest using Smooth Motion instead. I’ve tried both of them and found Smooth Motion to have fewer artifacts than Frame Gen.

You can also unlock the framerate in the PC version. By using MGSDeltaFix, you can set your framerate to whatever FPS value you want. I’ve finished the game with it and was able to fully enjoy it at 120FPS. This is a must-have mod for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
