Rian Johnson has crafted one of the greatest murder mystery franchises with Knives Out, and his latest entry, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, looks like it will not disappoint fans. Daniel Craig reprises his role as the enigmatic detective Benoit Blanc in the Netflix movie, and first reviews have landed the November release a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score (at time of writing).
The Knives Out franchise has become known for featuring some of the biggest ensemble casts of any movie franchise, and the latest addition is not about to let anyone down. An array of talent joins Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc for his latest mystery. This includes Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.
That kind of cast usually only comes together when a movie has something special to give, and as the first reviews for the film roll in, it seems that there is a good reason that so many stars wanted to be part of Johnson’s latest movie.
Awards Radar’s review labels the movie as the “best and most ambitious Benoit Blanc installment yet.” Meanwhile, Danielle Solzman od Solzy at the Movies calls the Benoit Blanc saga “one of the defining franchises of our time.” However, even though ScreenRant’s Mae Abdulbaki says the movie “keeps us on our toes” it has “lost some of its footing with this one.”
The ‘Knives Out’ Franchise Could Continue for Years
While some movie franchises fade into mediocrity very quickly as they rehash ideas and find they have nothing new to say, Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig have hit a rare seam of pure gold with the Knives Out saga. So, when is the next movie happening? Currently, there doesn’t appear to be a deal in place with Netflix to continue the franchise, but don’t expect it to be too long coming.
While Daniel Craig has made it clear that he loves playing Blanc – as it is “easier on the knees” than playing James Bond – Johnson would also love to make more movies. He previously said:
“I feel great! Because I have genuinely taken a swing each time that I didn’t think would work. Ultimately, that’s the thing you’re trying to avoid. The second you feel like you know how to do this, that leads nowhere good. So I feel fantastic. And with the movies, we can keep doing that. I don’t have something in my head right now. You kind of burn the ship into the sea each time and ask yourself, ‘How will I make anything ever again?’ But I would keep doing them as long as I can.”
With Wake Up Dead Man scoring some incredible first reviews, getting a swing at theaters before its Netflix debut, and seemingly delivering everything that a good movie should, would Netflix be foolish enough to let go of Johnson’s masterpiece franchise? Not likely.
