First Street Fighter film plot details revealed along with a brand new character

After more than two years since the new Street Fighter film was announced, the project has finally entered production in Australia, and we know a good bit more about it now.

On top of announcing Street Fighter’s release date and seemingly full cast, we also now have the first details about the movie’s plot.

The Hollywood Reporter shared the first public logline of the fighting game adaptation’s story, so fans can get a better idea of what to expect.

“Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, its GAME OVER!” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

So thankfully, it sounds like they’ll be largely skipping over the characters’ origin stories and have them already well established fighters in their world.

This also appears to be pretty much the same story setup as the actual Street Fighter 2 game with the addition of a handful of characters who weren’t present in the fighting game at the time.

We can probably expect to see Chun-Li recruit Ryu and Ken to join her in the new World Warrior Tournament to help take down Shadaloo due to their past performance, assuming they still took part in prior tournaments like the games.

It is interesting that the film will take place in 1993, which was during the height of Street Fighter 2’s popularity and close to the time the first film released.

Along with the other information, The Hollywood Reporter also makes mention of what seems to be a brand new character in Marvin played by former Saturday Night Live actor and comedian Kyle Mooney, so we’ll have to see what that’s about.

Yesterday’s reveals confirmed as well that Cammy and Zangief are going to be part of the cast portrayed by Mel Jarnson and Olivier Richters respectively.

Interestingly, other minor characters like Juli and Joe were announced too, who are going to be portrayed by martial artist and actor Rayna Vallandingham and two-time UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski respectively.

The rest of the main cast includes WWE’s Cody Rhodes as Guile, Orville Peck as Vega, 50 Cent as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Roman Reigns as Akuma, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Japanese wrestler Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, and Eric Andre as Don Sauvage.

So they got almost all of the wider Street Fighter 2 cast involved, but there’s still a few pieces missing like Fei Long, Dee Jay, and especially Sagat.

Street Fighter is set to hit theaters on October 16, 2026.
