Hundreds of thousands of people, and candidates in the upcoming New York mayoral race, took to the streets of Brooklyn Monday for the West Indian American Day Parade — amid an increase in security following a fatal shooting at last year’s event.
The parade kicked off at 11 a.m. on Utica Avenue near Lincoln Terrace Park with a VIP meet and greet event of elected officials and community leaders, including Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams and others.
Thousands of NYPD officers were in the area throughout the day.
The parade also doubled as a stage for politics. In addition to Adams, who is running for re-election, there were Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa of the Guardian Angels who walked the route, greeting voters.
Mingling with the elected officials and candidates were various Jewish activists from the Crown Heights community. Among them were Chanina Sperlin, Eli Cohen, Yaacov Behrman and Shmuel Rosenstein.
The parade passed by Lubavitch World Headquarters – 770 Eastern Parkway and the Jewish Children’s Museum without any incident.
