Minivan crashes into Harrisburg Kipona festival crowd, sending at least 3 to hospital

A woman is in police custody after driving past a barricade and into the crowd at Kipona Festival Monday evening in Harrisburg.

The woman, driving a red minivan, was initially stopped off State and Front streets outside of the festival, witnesses told PennLive. However, she drove through the barricade and toward the crowd on Front Street.

Two adults and one child were hit by the van. All three have been hospitalized, according to Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo.

Ebony Rogers, who ran a booth at the festival, said, in a video posted to Facebook, that she saw the van driving from Forster Street onto the sidewalk on North Front Street.

“We thought she was a vendor,” Rogers said. “She came in this way, drove on the sidewalk beeping her horn … beeping really loudly. We had no idea that she didn’t belong down here at all. She looked pissed off.”

Police could be heard yelling “hit and run” as the van drove off.

The van, which had two child car seats in the back, crashed into a barrier, where police were then able to apprehend the driver. She is in police custody but has not been charged.

Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the crash. The area where the crash occurred has since been cordoned off with police tape.
