While most attention remains focused on the Starship program, SpaceX is quietly achieving new milestones and setting records with its workhorse Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX launched nine rockets in the last ten days of August, which included nine Falcon 9 missions and a Starship launch. This launch cadence included a Falcon launch, which saw the first stage booster become the first rocket in history to fly and land for a record 30 times to push the limits of rocket reusability.

SpaceX’s latest launch was a batch of 28 Starlink satellites, which were launched from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Starlink launches represented the bulk of the firm’s manifest for August’s last ten days, as SpaceX launched five Starlink missions to send 132 satellites into low Earth orbit cumulatively.

Two of the remaining missions were military launches, with one sending a reconnaissance satellite for the Luxembourg military to a Sun synchronous orbit (SSO) and the other sending the USSF’s X-37B spaceplane. SpaceX has continued to launch the X-37B aircraft since it received the contract in 2021, and these launches have allowed the Space Force to test new-generation technologies such as quantum computing in space.

This particular X-37B launch carries a quantum inertial sensor to space as part of efforts to overcome limitations of traditional GPS navigation systems. It is part of the Defense Innovation Unit’s (DIU) Transition of Quantum Sensing (TQS) program, and it marks the first time such a sensor has been sent to space.

After the Space Force and Luxembourg military launches, SpaceX followed up with four additional launches to close the month. The second of these set a new record for the Falcon 9 rocket as it was the first time SpaceX flew a booster 30 times. This rocket’s landing was a unique achievement for SpaceX as it likely marks the upper limit for the number of times that the firm can use a rocket booster.

Most of the launches for this Falcon 9 booster, which set a new record were Starlink missions. According to SpaceX, this rocket flew 19 Starlink launches and four NASA missions in its manifest. Two of the NASA launches were crewed missions, while the other two sent cargo to the International Space Station (ISS). Other launches include satellites for the European Commission and an Indonesian telecommunications firm.

Starship Flight 10 is also included in the list of nine launches in August’s last ten days. The test was a major step forward for the Starship program as it was the first time SpaceX’s troubled second-generation upper stage Starship successfully splashed down in the Indian Ocean since it first flew in January.

SpaceX’s final August launch was a Starlink mission, which sent a batch of 28 satellites to low Earth orbit. The firm’s next mission will be another Starlink launch due to lift off on Wednesday.
