The Cubs are signing Carlos Santana

Well, here’s a bit of a surprise:

Carlos Santana is 39 and in his 16th MLB season. He has batted .225/.316/.333 (1.3 bWAR) with 11 home runs in 116 games for the Guardians this year.

Santana is only a first baseman and/or designated hitter. This move likely means that Owen Caissie gets optioned back to Triple-A Iowa. That would only be a procedural move; Caissie would likely be re-activated when rosters expand tomorrow. Meanwhile, Santana would have to be added to the 40-man roster by the end of the day today to be postseason eligible. No official Cubs roster move has been made, but I would expect this to happen so that Santana could be on a postseason roster. Someone would have to be removed from the 40-man to make room for Santana. I would expect that to be Ben Cowles designated for assignment.

This post will be updated when the Cubs make this move official. As always, we await developments.
