During an August 25 appearance on TMZ Live, trans reality star Ts Madison questioned why Snoop took issue with Lightyear, which is a Buzz Lightyear origin story, featuring two moms, given that some of his own music videos feature women dancing with and kissing other women.
“As a parent, you should also explain to your children that other things exist in the world, outside of what you have deemed normal in your own home,” Madison said. “We’ve been conditioned to be able to understand heteronormative activity. We’ve conditioned it because that’s all we see, because we’ve always, as queer people, been pushed to the side… So it is time for us to have these uncomfortable conversations.”
Lightyear’s lesbian kiss was originally cut from the film. However, Disney restored the moment after facing backlash for the company’s response to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation. The film was banned in 14 countries based on its inclusion of the kiss.
The writer who has taken credit for introducing the storyline responded to the controversy on Threads. “As we wrote early versions of what became LIGHTYEAR, a key character needed a partner, and it was so natural to write ‘she’ instead of ‘he,’” playwright and podcaster Lauren Gunderson wrote to the platform. “As small as that detail is in the film, I knew the representational effect it could have. Small line, big deal I was elated that they kept it.”
