The Cincinnati Bengals seemed to hit on their fourth-round pick in 2022 when they selected Cordell Volson, who was able to win a starting job immediately as a rookie.
However, the issue came over the next couple of years as Volson did not seem to grow as a player, largely staying stagnant as a below-average guard. Going into 2025, Volson was fighting for his starting job after the team signed Lucas Patrick in free agency. That competition was decided when Volson unfortunately suffered an injury that seems to be keeping him out for the whole season, possibly ending his career in Cincinnati.
On cutdown day, the Bengals waived Volson with an injury designation, which means he cannot play for the team this year. He can negotiate a settlement that will make him available to sign with other teams, which seems unlikely given his injury. He can also be claimed by another team, which seems unlikely given his injury and looming cap hit of about $2.4 million, according to Over The Cap. If someone else claims him, they’re on the hook for that money.
Otherwise, if no one claims him, Volson will revert to the Bengals’ injured reserve, where he will remain until he can pass a physical, while the Bengals will still be on the hook for his remaining $2.4 million.
Regardless, it seems very possible that that will be the last we see of Volson in stripes. While he was never the best guard, he provided the team’s offensive line with some consistency and dedication.
