The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is slated to release sometime before the end of this year, though we’ve yet to receive a confirmation of the exact release window beyond that.
With Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces recently announced to be part of the Legacy Kollection, we now know there to be 11 different games that will be part of the package.
The confirmed titles coming to the Legacy Kollection include Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat 4 (arcade version only), Mortal Kombat Advance, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Game Boy Advance version only), Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.
“We’re actually the company that did the very first commercial emulation.” — Dan Amrich
We’re getting Mortal Kombat 4, but it’s easy enough to notice how Mortal Kombat Gold, which essentially acts as an enhanced port of Mortal Kombat 4 for the Sega Dreamcast with additional characters and content, is absent from the Legacy Kollection.
During an interview with Mortal Kombat Secrets, Dan Amrich of Digital Eclipse explained why this is. It would appear that even the developers wanted to include this game in the Legacy Kollection, but were ultimately unable to due to a number of variables.
“So, keeping in mind that Digital Eclipse has done emulation for years and years. We’re actually the company that did the very first commercial emulation. Our very first emulated game three Williams arcade games — Robotron, Joust and Defender for Machintosh back in the early 90s,” said Amrich.
“So, we have arcade emulation and we have 8-bit and 16-bit emulation. This was our first time to move forward with PlayStation emulation. Dreamcast is four years of advanced technology beyond that.
“So, I understand the appeal of Mortal Kombat Gold. I know why everybody wants it. But we’re just not ready to do it yet.” — Dan Amrich
“Do we like Mortal Kombat Gold? Yes! Did we hear that you asked for it? Yes! Do we want it? Yes! Is it something that we’d like to do sometime in the future? We would love to. Do we have plans to do it right now? No. Should you expect it? No.
“Honestly… I know why everybody loves… I still have my Dreamcast. I still have my Mortal Kombat Gold disc at home… So, I understand the appeal of Mortal Kombat Gold. I know why everybody wants it. But we’re just not ready to do it yet.”
They keyword to pay attention to is “yet.” Amrich hints at the possibility that games like Mortal Kombat Gold could be added to the Legacy Kollection via DLC or to a future package sometime in the future.
However, Amrich is quick to point out that Digital Eclipse currently has no plans to add DLC to the Legacy Kollection as of right now, merely mentioning it as a possibility in the future. Of course, this would all depend on whether or not it’s “technically possible” to even add these games via DLC.
Needless to say, Amrich has a lot of interesting things to say on the subject. Check it all out in the video below:
