The Philadelphia Eagles have released a quarterback hours after trading for another.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who was competing this summer for the Eagles’ No. 3 quarterback job, was waived on Sunday afternoon, the franchise announced.
The news of Thomspon-Robinson being cut came shortly after the Eagles traded for Vikings backup Sam Howell. Philadelphia acquired the former Washington Commanders starter from Minnesota, as well as a sixth-round pick, in exchange for a fifth-round pick.
The Eagles needed a better option as Jalen Hurts’ backup to start the season. Tanner McKee has a finger injury that will not require surgery, but he will miss some time.
The Eagles wouldn’t have had to trade for Howell if Thompson-Robinson or Kyle McCord, the sixth-round rookie out of Syracuse, performed well this preseason. But neither No. 3 options did enough to instill any sort of confidence.
Thompson-Robinson, who was acquired in the Kenny Pickett-Cleveland Browns trade in March, started training camp strong but faded fast.
In two preseason games, Thompson-Robinson completed 10 of 16 passes for 73 yards and no touchdowns. His fate with the Eagles was all but sealed when he did not appear in the preseason finale against the New York Jets.
After Sunday’s transactions, Hurts, McKee and Howell will be the three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.
McCord is expected to be cut. But the former St. Joseph’s Prep standout will be a practice squad candidate for the Eagles if he makes it through waivers.
The Eagles will make their 53-man roster official by Tuesday’s deadline.
