HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawaii football team kicked off the 2025 season against Stanford Saturday.
The ‘Bow’s season opener came down to the wire as a last-second field goal gave Hawaii the win and the lead, beating Stanford 23-20.
It’s the first time UH has defeated Stanford in five meetings.
The Cardinal jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after the Trees scored on their opening drive, followed by a fumble recovery in the endzone.
UH found the endzone late in the first quarter. The ‘Bows defense held Stanford to just 13 points while quarterback Micah Alejado marched down to score before the end of the first half.
Alejado would take a hard hit to start the second half, and backup QB Luke Weaver would briefly enter the game.
Alejado would reenter the game to start Manoa’s second drive of the half with tape on his ankle.
Stanford relied on the run game and took the lead during the fourth quarter.
After a 37-yard field goal from ‘Bows kicker Kansei Matsuzawa, the game was tied with just over two minutes left to go.
Hawaii forced Stanford to punt and took possession of the ball.
Alejado would lead the team downfield, and with three seconds left on the game clock, ‘Bow’s kicker, Matsuzawa, would bring home the win with a 38-yard field goal.
Final score, 23-20 — this is the program’s first win over a Power 4 conference opponent in the Timmy Chang era.
The ‘Bows take on Arizona next Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
