It’s official, James Gunn’s “Superman” has become the first superhero film this year to fly past the $600 million mark at the global box-office.
The film hit $343.6 million domestically and $256 million overseas by the end of yesterday – a total of $599.6 million. It has now passed that with Friday morning’s grosses.
It’s also the first DC release to achieve the $600 million milestone since “The Batman” in 2022.
The film boasts a large net budget of at least $225 million before marketing, and is the inaugural release of a reinvigoration of the DC brand following multiple disappointments.
In a recent interview (via World of Reel), Gunn reportedly said the film’s box office success came with “an enormous sense of relief” and he can now “focus purely on creativity without the pressure of worrying about the survival of the DC brand like I did a month and a half ago”.
Though international numbers for the film have been overall soft, it looks like it will retain the crown of the best performing superhero-themed film this year as “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” currently sits at $472.7 million and is unlikely to hit the $600m barrier by the time it ends its run.
This weekend will also see the Brad Pitt-led “F1 surpass the same box-office barrier as “Superman”.
