Pembroke, N.Y. — Authorities have released new details about the tragic tour bus rollover on Interstate 90 in Pembroke that resulted in five fatalities.
BACKGROUND: ‘Tragic’ tour bus crash kills 5 people on New York State Thruway
The New York State Police reported that the 2005 Van Wool Bus and Coach, operated by M&Y Tour Inc from Staten Island, was traveling eastbound from Niagara Falls to New York City when it veered off the roadway into the median. The bus then abruptly corrected, causing it to overturn and roll off the south embankment of I-90.
The crash led to multiple passengers being ejected and trapped, with five confirmed dead at the scene. The bus was carrying a total of 54 occupants.
The deceased have been identified as Shankar Kumar Jha, 65, of Madhu Bani, India; Pinki Changrani, 60, of East Brunswick, N.J.; Xie Hongzhuo, 22, a Columbia University student from Beijing, China; Zhang Xiaolan, 55, of Jersey City, N.J.; and Jian Mingli, 56, also of Jersey City, N.J.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Authorities noted that the bus operator showed no signs of impairment, and there was no mechanical failure detected in the vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing.
