Former Michigan receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones was released by the New Orleans Saints on Thursday a day after the team acquired another wideout via trade.
New Orleans, which sent a 2026 fourth-round pick and 2027 seventh-round pick to the Broncos for Devaughn Vele, released Peoples-Jones to make room on the roster.
Peoples-Jones, a 2020 sixth-round pick of the Browns who spent 2023 and 2024 with the Detroit Lions’ organization, had a quiet preseason with the Saints after signing a one-year deal this offseason.
The 6-foot-2 former five-star recruit out of Detroit Cass Tech didn’t record any receptions in the team’s first two preseason games and returned two punts for 17 yards. The Saints are hoping Vele, who had 41 catches for 475 yards and three touchdowns last season as a rookie, can provide more production.
The Lions sent a sixth-round pick to Cleveland for Peoples-Jones at the 2023 trade deadline, but the talented wideout had a hard time cracking the lineup in Detroit. He caught five passes for 58 yards in seven games and then spent all of 2024 on the practice squad.
If Peoples-Jones isn’t picked up by another team, he could be a candidate to join the Saints’ practice squad. He is just three years removed from a career-best season of 61 catches for 839 yards.
