It wouldn’t be the Little League World Series without some controversy. With that said, the latest drama involves one of the most egregious calls you’ll see from an umpire.

On Tuesday afternoon, South Carolina defeated Hawaii by a final score of 3-0. During the top of the sixth, South Carolina’s Andrew Bogan broke things open with a two-run single with runners on second and third. That’s all South Carolina needed to eliminate the West Region champions from the tournament.
Before Bogan came up with this clutch hit, South Carolina nearly hit into an inning-ending double play. It was a standard groundout to the shortstop that somehow turned into an officiating blunder.
After the South Carolina runner was thrown out at first, Hawaii tried to get catch Preston Ware and Bubba McQuilkin sleeping on the bases. However, they weren’t in a force-out position. They would need to be tagged in order to make the final out of the inning.

Well, that didn’t stop Tuesday’s umpire from punching out South Carolina.

We’re not kidding. One of the umpires for the South Carolina-Hawaii initially called this a force-out at second base before correcting the call.
Fans watching the LLWS want this umpire fired.
“I mean, what are we doing here? That’s just basic stuff that this umpire clearly doesn’t know. You can have a bad strike zone and get away with it. That’s fine. That’s been going on for centuries,” Zach Dean of OutKick wrote. “But this guy clearly just doesn’t know the rules of baseball. That’s a problem. Our little leaguers deserve better.”

“We have our first real ‘these umps are clearly not qualified’ moment of The Little League World Series,” Barstool Sports wrote.
“That ump should be fired,” one fan commented.
“What in the heck is this umpire calling in the Nevada vs South Carolina game? Absolutely horrific calls. Better tell him to make a change. Absolutely awful,” another fan said.
LLWS umpires go through a selection process.
In order for an umpire to work a LLWS game, they must have experience working a region tournament event. They also have to submit an application through the Umpire Registry. Nearly 100 umpires were selected for this year’s tournament.

“All seven World Series tournaments will now feature a set of veteran Crew Chiefs, which have been used at the Little League Baseball and Softball World Series in previous years to assist with mentorship, education, and growth of the umpires throughout their World Series experience,” a press release from Little League said. “The selection process to become a World Series umpire is lengthy and rigorous and has become an honor that only a select group have gone on to achieve.”
We can’t deny that LLWS umpires put in a ton of work to get to this point. That being said, they can’t forget easy rules mid-game. It’s a bad look for the sport and it has to be incredibly frustrating for the players and coaches.
South Carolina will be back in action Wednesday night against South Dakota. Hopefully, there aren’t any ridiculous calls made by the umpires.
