Everything Jenny Han said about Summer I Turned Pretty ending

She has confirmed that there will be a clear cut decision at the end

We’re almost at the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty season three, and nerves are high. This season has been a total rollercoaster. It started with a four-year time jump: Belly’s now a junior at Finch, Conrad’s off at Stanford studying medicine, and Jeremiah… well, he’s still stuck in college, clinging onto that “super senior” life.

With only a few weeks of episodes left before the finale drops, we’re finally getting close to the answer we’ve all been waiting for since season one: Who does Belly actually end up with?

In the books, it was always Conrad. He was Belly’s first slow dance, her first heartbreak, and ultimately, her first and forever love. The final pages of We’ll Always Have Summer saw Belly marrying Conrad on Cousins Beach in a beautifully nostalgic, full-circle ending.

But Jenny Han, the author of the trilogy and showrunner of the series, has made it very clear that the TV ending won’t be the same as the books. She’s been dropping little hints about the ending and who Belly might choose. So, here’s everything Jenny Han has said about the ending of The Summer I Turned Pretty.

Jenny Han has had more than a decade to reflect on her original ending, and she admits she couldn’t resist tweaking it for the show. Speaking to Elite Daily, she said, “I always knew how I wanted to end the books. But with the show, I went into it with an open mind. I wanted to approach it with fresh eyes and just see what sort of magic happened on screen. I am somebody who is always changing things up.”

For Jenny, it’s about making the series its own thing, not just a retelling. “People will be like, ‘Why are you changing that? That was working well!’ But to me, it could always be better,” she explained.

Why it won’t be a “neat” ending

Jenny has stressed she doesn’t go for perfectly tidy conclusions. On the Wild Card with Rachel Martin podcast, she said, “I like a hopeful ending. But I don’t like too neat of an ending, personally… That is the tragedy of the story, is that no matter what, you’re going to be hurting somebody that you love dearly.”

For her, it’s about emotional honesty. Someone’s heart will break, but the audience will still be left with a sense of hope.

Easter eggs and pop culture references

Jenny’s a master of Easter eggs, and she confirmed the show is full of them. From The Notebook vibes (Conrad fixing the roof) to Pulp Fiction nods, and even a poster styled after Bye Bye Birdie, where the heroine ends up with someone called Conrad. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

She also teased that there are hidden details viewers haven’t even noticed yet. Could they be pointing to who Belly ends up with? Quite possibly.

Jeremiah, Redbird and new characters

One of the biggest differences between the books and the show is Jeremiah’s bisexuality, which has opened the door to theories that he won’t end up with Belly at all. People are buzzing about his new college buddy, Redbird, who reappears later in the season. Some think the two might be endgame for Jeremiah, giving him his own happy ending separate from Belly.

Meanwhile, Conrad’s California med school storyline introduces new friends that show how much he’s grown since his broody, broken days. Jenny said he’s finally become a version of himself that he struggled to be before. So maybe he’s finally ready to be with Belly. Just maybe.

So, who will Belly choose?

Interestingly, Jenny has at one point said that Belly doesn’t have to choose anyone at all. On the Wild Card podcast, when the host suggested Belly would eventually pick between the Fisher brothers, Jenny interrupted, “Well, she doesn’t. I don’t think she has to choose one.” She called that the real tragedy of the story — whichever way it goes, someone Belly loves will be hurt.

That said, she’s also confirmed on the CBS Morning Show that the show will have a clear-cut decision at the end. Jenny was asked point-blank if the show’s ending will give us a definitive answer on Belly’s choice. Her reply? “I would say so.”

So, while Jenny has toyed with the idea of Belly not choosing, everything else she has hinted at points in one direction: Belly will choose someone. Maybe not exactly how she did in the books, but she will have her bright daylight ending.
