After A Minecraft Movie broke multiple records on its way to $995M globally, Kirsten Dunst wants to join the franchise.
The Oscar nominee recently threw her hat in the ring for a part in Warner Bros sequel, noting that her kids loved the original big screen adaptation of the video game, and she wants to be part of a financially successful movie.
“Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” said Dunst to Town & Country.
Director Jared Hess previously told Deadline a Minecraft Movie sequel “would be so much fun” after the first movie’s record-breaking box office haul kicked off in April, becoming Warner Bros’ third largest opening of all time.
“We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to,” explained Hess. “I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”

After teasing “the other massively critical character” from the game, Alex, at the end of the original, Hess noted, “It’s Steve (Jack Black) and Alex, and so that’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt.”
Although Kate McKinnon voiced Alex in the scene, the character’s face isn’t shown. Perhaps Dunst could return to her MJ red hair for the part in the sequel.
Dunst’s last theatrical release was Alex Garland‘s Civil War (2024), which surpassed $127M worldwide, marking A24‘s best opening ever at $25.7M. After making her onscreen debut at age 6, Dunst’s highest-grossing title has been Spider-Man 3 (2007) at $892M worldwide.
