BYU is handing over the reigns to a true freshman as Bear Bachmeier will be BYU’s starting Quarterback, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
An early enrollee at Stanford in January, Bear transferred with his brother, Tiger, in May after Stanford fired head coach Troy Taylor. Bear won the starting job over returnees McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourquet. The race became a two-man battle between Bear and McCae, and Bear ultimately won out over the former Utah State QB.
Bear becomes the first true freshman to start at QB for BYU since Zach Wilson in 2018. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, Bear gives BYU the highest ceiling for BYU to follow up a 11-2 season. Bear is a dual-threat QB who is a powerful runner and can make plays inside and outside the pocket. There will certainly be learning curves with Bear, but he will be able to rely on veteran playmakers, a stout defense, and a schedule which should allow him to ease into things a bit. BYU opens with FCS foe Portland State, a gutted Stanford team in Provo, a bye week, and then a road trip to East Carolina before opening Big 12 play at Colorado.
BYU will likely rely heavily on its running game behind junior back LJ Martin. Senior WR Chase Roberts is one of the best WRs in the Big 12, and BYU has other experienced wideouts and Tiger Bachmeier to take pressure off of Bear.
