Game of Thrones delivered plenty of incestuous moments among the families of Westeros and beyond, but Sansa Stark and Jon Snow never crossed that line and, despite their fractured family ties, were purely platonic throughout the fantasy series. However, this had inadvertently caused actors Sophie Turner and Kit Harington a few awkward moments while filming their new movie, The Dreadful, which required them to play lovers and get intimate with each other for several scenes. As Turner put it, in a recent interview, it was “vile.”
During a Late Night with Seth Meyers appearance, Turner, who is both star and producer of the movie, revealed that she was the one who pushed to have her former on-screen brother as her costar without really reading the script in depth. She said:
“And so, I sent the script to Kit, and he kind of sent me a message going like, ‘Yeah, I’d love to, but this is going to be really fucking weird, Soph,’ and I was like, what is he talking about? And then I was reading it and I’m like, kiss, kiss, sex, kiss, sex. And then I’m like, ‘Oh shoot, that’s my brother.’
So then, we put it out of our minds and then we get on set and it’s the first kissing scene, and we’re both retching. Like, really, it is vile. It was the worst. Another really bad moment in my career.”
‘The Dreadful’ Is a Classic Gothic Horror
Gothic horror movies have been a fixture of British culture for decades, and The Dreadful is set to follow in the footsteps of atmospheric movies like The Woman in Black in being another dark chiller to add to the collection. The synopsis reads:
“Anne and her mother-in-law Morwen lead a difficult life in seclusion. They both live on the edge of society. When a man from their past suddenly reappears in their lives, this marks the beginning of a series of remarkable events. These mainly mean a turning point for Anne.”
Written and directed by Natasha Kermani, who previously helmed horror hit Lucky, The Dreadful sees Turner play Anne, a woman living on society’s fringes with her formidable mother-in-law, Morwen (Marcia Gay Harden), when Harington’s Jago turns up and stirs up secrets and desire. The film wrapped filming back in January, but has yet to receive worldwide distribution dates. True Brit Entertainment will distribute in the U.K. and Ireland.
Currently, both Turner and Harington are caught in speculation about possible future roles in some big franchises. Turner is still rumored to be taking over the role of Lara Croft in another reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. Back in May, the actress was seen getting into some heavy training for a role, and many began speculating that it could be to take over from Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in the long-gestating Amazon TV reworking of the video game franchise.
Meanwhile, Harington’s possible return to the MCU is still completely up in the air. After making a fleeting appearance in Eternals, Harington’s character was expected to be transformed into Black Knight and could have been tied to Blade’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the lukewarm reception to the 2021 ensemble movie, and the continued struggles to bring Blade back to life, have left Harington’s possible return hanging in the balance. It has taken some post-credits scenes more than a decade to be resolved – and several are still to pay off – but could the Black Knight tease be the first to never come to fruition? Not if Kevin Feige has anything to do with it…but fans may have to be incredibly patient.
