Last Friday, Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders put the NFL on notice by lighting up the Carolina Panthers in his preseason debut.

Sanders completed 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards with two touchdowns. His performance was impressive enough to warrant a move up the depth chart, albeit the Browns were unwilling to make that type of commitment.
Plenty of NFL fans accused Browns coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry of sabotaging Sanders prior to Friday’s game. While the rumors haven’t died down completely, Cleveland’s video team recorded some footage that should put any rumors about Berry to rest.
After Sanders’ preseason debut was over, he received words of encouragement from Berry on the sideline.

“Really, really good job,” Berry told Sanders. “I’m proud of you. Really really nice job.”
Sanders then replied, “You’re not fully proud – kind of proud.” That led to a really wise response from Berry.
“Look, was it perfect? No. But you made plays, you operated,” Berry said. “So just stack the next one. Listen, you did a nice job, okay? So just take what you learned from tonight, apply it to the joint practices, and then the next preseason game. Alright? … Really good job. That’s a great start.”

Sanders will have to wait for his second chance.
Unfortunately, Sanders isn’t expected to suit up on Saturday against the Philadelphia Eagles. That’s because he’s battling an oblique strain.
“Yeah, felt it early, I think warming up and then felt it throughout individual [drills], so took a look at it. If it’s a right guard, you can play through that. When it’s a quarterback, you kind of need that muscle to throw,” Stefanski said, via Pro Football Talk. “So, unfortunately, going to put him down for a little bit here.”

The Browns are expected to get a look at Dillon Gabriel this weekend. They selected the Oregon quarterback in the third round of this year’s draft.
If Gabriel struggles on Saturday, that could open the door for Sanders to move up the depth chart.
