The Alien franchise has been around for decades, and its quality has fluctuated since Ridley Scott’s strong debut with Alien in 1979. However, recent additions to the franchise prove there are more stories to tell.
Following the resounding success of 2024’s Alien: Romulus, the sci-fi franchise continued with FX’s series Alien: Earth. The series had an out-of-this-world reception, which further hyped up the release. One day after its official premiere, Alien: Earth is already the No. 1 show in the world, FlixPatrol reports.
Alien: Earth debuted at the top of the charts in 34 countries on Disney+ immediately after its premiere. As expected, the show also debuted at No. 1 domestically on Hulu, where the show is streaming in the U.S. The series premiered with only two episodes, but the worldwide interest in the franchise is still strong.
The new series comes from Noah Hawley, who also made his acting debut in the series. Alien: Earth serves as a prequel to the franchise, set two years before the events of the 1979 hit film. The series had been long in development, as it was officially announced in 2019, but it officially started production in July 2023 after the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also affected by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, with filming stopping in August until Apr. 2024.
The new addition to the Alien franchise revolves around a core ensemble cast led by Sydney Chandler as Wendy, the first woman to have her consciousness fully transferred into a synthetic body. The ensemble cast includes Alex Lawther’s CJ, Wendy’s brother, a soldier and medic, Timothy Olyphant plays Kirsh, Wendy’s synthetic mentor, while Samuel Blenkin will play Boy Kavalier, the CEO of the Prodigy Corporation.
Alien: Earth‘s debut score was thrilling, a 90% from the critics, a score that has since grown to an amazing 92%, with the Certified Fresh badge. The early reaction from the audience is not as exciting as the series currently has a 77% score on the Popcornmeter. However, the series debuted with its first two episodes, with six more to follow that could change the public’s opinion.
The Alien Franchise Continues
Alien: Earth could continue with Season 2, but the series hasn’t officially received a confirmation. The new addition to the franchise just debuted, and while it’s unclear what comes next for Alien: Earth, the franchise keeps thriving.
After the success Alien: Romulus had with the critics and the audience, becoming a major commercial hit, the film has officially received a sequel. Director Fede Álvarez is officially set to return for the sequel. Ridley Scott also has plans to continue the franchise and is working on a new Alien film. So far, there is no confirmation on what the new film is about, but the director teased that Alien: Covenant deserved a sequel. “[Alien:] Covenant is the best one [for a sequel] because it leaves the girl in the [cryo pod] and [Michael Fassbender’s killer android] David has alien eggs and 2,000 colonists hanging around. It’s a perfect beginning.”
The first two episodes of Alien: Earth are available on FX and FX on Hulu, with new episodes set to follow every Tuesday until its season finale on Sept. 23.
