After two years of titanium iPhone Pro models and many more years of stainless steel, Apple is rumored to be switching to aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro. Titanium, instead, will be used on the ultra thin iPhone 17 Air.
That may seem like a step away from premium materials for the Pro model. For anyone bored by variations of gray for Apple’s best iPhones, however, it appears to be good news.
The reason comes down to color.
Apple has done a decent job making a range of colors out of stainless steel and titanium. Black, silver, gray, and variations of gold have been joined by versions of blue, green, and purple.
The pacific blue iPhone 12 Pro has been my favorite, but the deep purple iPhone 14 Pro feels like the boldest option yet. My least favorite was the very muted sierra blue iPhone 13 Pro, and alpine green arriving mid-cycle took it out of the running for me.
For iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, it seems possible we may actually see a color that can’t be mistaken for silver or black. The rumored orange option looks similar to the coral iPhone XR. Say what you will about the iPhone XR specs, but color is something Apple delivered well with that model.
More recently, the standard iPhone 16 models have shown how well Apple can do anodized aluminum. The iMac line is another example of Apple’s best color work with the material. Even aluminum Apple Watches have excelled at bold colors. There really aren’t great examples of Apple doing vibrant, fun colors with stainless steel or titanium.
If Majin Bu’s latest post showing an orange iPhone 17 Pro dummy unit is anything like what Apple unveils next month, I could certainly live with a friendly, space shuttle astronaut suit orange for a while.
