Larian has moved on from Baldur’s Gate 3 and won’t be returning for another entry in the series. Besides the occasional maintenance updates, the game won’t be receiving any new content or DLC. Of course, this doesn’t mean that we’ve seen the end of the series; Wizards of the Coast has found a gold mine in that respect.
However, WotC won’t solely rely on Baldur’s Gate to leverage video game audiences, and has already announced a new Dungeons & Dragons game with Giant Skull, the studio founded by God of War 3 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s Stig Asmussen. That being said, Wizards of the Coast president John Hight has said “of course” Baldur’s Gate 4 will happen at some point.
We’re Definitely Getting Baldur’s Gate 4
In a conversation with The Game Business (via GamesRadar), he said that a successor for Baldur’s 3 will definitely happen, but the D&D game that Giant Skull is working on will be very different, and appeal to wider audiences. “Baldur’s Gate is an incredible game,” he said. “And of course, we’re going to do a successor. This is not the successor to that game.”
“We go to Stig and his team to tell an incredible story and bring D&D to a very broad audience,” he added. “Ideally, the game will appeal to D&D players because it will help them realize their imagination. But it’s also going to hopefully appeal to people that love playing action games, that love the Jedi games, that love God of War games.”
He explained that D&D has only become more popular in the last few years and Wizards of the Coast wants to do everything to ensure that it continues to remain so for a long time. That means branching out to more video game genres and possibly even more mediums like movies and TV.
While we’re never getting a Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC, D&D’s new Forgotten Realms books will come with an expansion that focuses on Astarion, before the events of the game. It’s not the DLC you may have been hoping for, but at least you’ll get to spend more time with Astarion.
