Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake won’t have upgrade path for Switch to Switch 2 version

Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is set to Switch and Switch 2 on October 30, 2025, and Square Enix has provided more information about the compatibility between both versions.

In an FAQ section for the game’s official site, Square Enix shares that there is no upgrade path for Nintendo Switch 2 users, and that save data is not transferrable between the two versions. We have the quote from the site here:

“Q:Can copies of the Switch version of DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake be upgraded to the Switch 2 version?

A: No, there is no upgrade path currently available or planned. Please buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play it on.”

Download codes for in game items also don’t work across the different versions either. The only thing that seems to work across the board, is save data bonus items from the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.

It should be also noted that the physical version of 1 & 2 for Switch 2 was previously stated to be on a game key card, and there’s no mention of how big the file size will be. We’ll be sure to let you know once the info gets out.

Square Enix has also recently announced a physical collectors edition for both Switch 1 and 2. You can read all about that here.
