While fans of the iconic franchise have been speculating over the future of Baldur’s Gate, nobody knew for certain whether Baldur’s Gate 4 would ever happen. However, that has officially changed as of a recent interview with Wizards of the Coast execs.
According to a Game Business interview with Wizards of the Coast president John Hight and Giant Skull leader Stig Asmussen, Baldur’s Gate 4 is officially going to happen at some point in the future. They didn’t confirm when this would happen, and can say for sure it’s not their next upcoming game, but the confirmation that Baldur’s Gate 4 will definitely happen is great news for fans.
“Of Course” Baldur’s Gate 4 Will Happen, Says WOTC President
John Hight Says Baldur’s Gate Is An Incredible Game & It’s A Given There Will Be A Sequel
While President of Wizards of the Coast John Hight wasn’t necessarily at the Summer Game Fest in June to discuss Baldur’s Gate’s future, he did clarify in an interview with Game Business that the game is definitely going to happen. Hight stated, “Baldur’s Gate is an incredible game. And of course, we’re going to do a successor.“
The game Hight was actually there to discuss was Giant Skull’s untitled D&D project.
This is a huge confirmation for fans of the franchise, despite lacking any form of detail about when and how BG4 will eventually happen. However, the game Hight was actually there to discuss was Giant Skull’s untitled D&D project, which Baldur’s Gate fans will probably be interested in as well.
Giant Skull’s D&D game promises to have a similar appeal to fans of the D&D universe, and while it’s probably not going to be the same type of gameplay as you’d experience in BG3, it will likely appeal to the same sort of players.
Wizards President Confirms New Game Isn’t BG4
Giant Skull Is Not Making Baldur’s Gate 4
Now that players have confirmation that Baldur’s Gate 4 is definitely going to happen, that’s about all they’re going to have to go on for the foreseeable future. The game that Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull were there to discuss is NOT Baldur’s Gate 4, and BG4 hasn’t received any official announcements either in terms of who will be developing it.
It has been confirmed by Larian that they are not planning on developing Baldur’s Gate 4, so whatever sequel we do end up with will be spearheaded by a completely different studio.
Overall, Baldur’s Gate 3 fans can rest assured that they will certainly see a Baldur’s Gate 4 at some point in the future. The specific details about the sequel will likely remain nebulous for a while, but when official development starts, it will be hard to keep quiet for sure.
