GREEN BAY – Packers QB Jordan Love will be sidelined until next week due to a procedure he’s having on his injured left thumb.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the news Tuesday morning, saying it’s a ligament injury to his non-throwing hand and he’s hopeful Love will be back at practice sometime next week.
Head Coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Love is undergoing the procedure Tuesday morning and it’s expected to be a “relatively quick recovery.”
Love will miss Tuesday’s practice as well as Thursday’s joint practice in Indianapolis and Saturday’s preseason game against the Colts, but the injury is not expected to affect Love’s availability for the regular season.
“As he gets back next week, we’ll kind of assess where he’s at,” Gutekunst said. “It’s one of those things where he’ll be back at practice next week … we’ll kind of see and it’ll be day to day a little bit.
“More importantly, he’ll be ready for Week 1 and that’s the most important thing.”
Love injured the thumb on his final snap in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Jets, when he scrambled out of the pocket, stopped and was looking to make a throw before crossing the line of scrimmage. He then was sacked for a 3-yard loss.
Apparently his left thumb hit a Jets player’s helmet as he was being tackled, causing the injury. Love tried to practice Monday with some tape on the thumb to see how that would go, and after further discussion, it was decided a procedure was the preferred route.
Gutekunst does not “foresee this affecting him long term at all.”
“He certainly was able to function, but as we looked at all the options and he did as well, the best option I think for him to get back the fastest and feel the best was to do this,” Gutekunst said. “He wanted to go out there yesterday to see how it felt and once we got through that, we made the decision and … he should meet us in Indy on Wednesday.”
LaFleur said it’s “highly unlikely” Love would play in the preseason finale vs. Seattle, and it’ll be assessed day to day regarding his availability for the joint practice with the Seahawks next Thursday.
