If you’ve been sharing your HBO Max account, you’ll soon need to pay an additional monthly fee to keep doing so. Starting in September, the streaming service provider says it’s cracking down on password sharing and accounts being used in multiple locations.
According to Fortune, Warner Brothers Discovery (WBD) — which owns HBO Max — will require users to pay an additional $7.99 per month if they want to share their account with someone outside their home. The fee has actually been in place for some time, but enforcement has been limited.
WBD streaming chief JB Perrette told Fortune the company has been testing for months to determine which users are legitimate and which ones are sharing a password. Now that testing is done, the company is ready to begin enforcing the fee.
HBO Max is the latest streaming service to crack down on password sharing. Netflix and Disney+ have each announced efforts to stop password sharing in recent years.
In an earnings call earlier this year, WBD reported having more than 122 million users worldwide. The streaming service offers a variety of programming options including content from TV networks like Discovery, CNN, TNT, HBO and more.
HBO Max plans start at $9.99 a month and range up to $20.99 per month. Those prices are slightly lower if you pay for the entire year up front.
