Marc Maron had about the most intense induction into the Swiftie Hall of Fame as a person can get. As described in his latest special, Panicked, Maron fell hard for Taylor Swift. Literally, he passed out while listening to Midnights. Maron was on a hike, mourning the death of his partner Lynne Shelton and also wondering why people like Taylor Swift. “The interesting thing about grief is that when you’re in it at the beginning, it’s all-consuming. It takes over your mind, your heart, your spirit and you can’t stop it, and you don’t know if it’ll ever go away,” he says. In that state, Swift’s “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” is going to have an affect. Maron listened to the song on repeat, sobbing. And because he was on a hike, also stretching. Maron blacked out in the middle of a squat stretch. He came back to Swift singing “Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.”
Maron used the song in his special, which he revealed on Good One cost him 50 large. Now he’s also doing a cover. Maron posted his version of “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” on social media, noting that it’s a lot let polished than the Jack Antonoff-produced version. “We did it like Mazzy Star-ish. It broke me,” he wrote. “I got choked up in the middle of the last verse. It was pretty raw, very emotional but I felt good about it.”
