Tonight’s (Aug. 8) episode of SmackDown ended with an angle that probably indicates who WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will be defending the gold against at Clash in Paris on Aug. 31.
The main event tonight was a tag team match of Rhodes and John Cena vs. Logan Paul and Drew McIntyre, which was set up earlier in the show. The YouTube douchebag took the easy way out by delivering a low blow to Cena late in the bout, so the referee had no choice but to call for the bell. Cena and Paul brawled to the back after that, leaving the spotlight on Drew and Cody.
They had their own brawl at ringside, but it was ultimately Drew who scored the big blow when he blasted Cody with the WWE championship belt. Then he Claymore’d Cody’s head through the hard wooden front of the table. The WWE commentators immediately blurted out loud, strange noises to make sure you understood just how bad things were for Rhodes.
Joe Tessitore called it a “major incident” and said there were “grave concerns” as Cody was laid out under the announce table, with McIntyre talking trash over him about how he’s coming for the gold.
What’s your reaction to the show-closing angle on SmackDown, Cagesiders?
