Naturally aspirated engines and manual-shift transmissions used to be the hallmarks of the industry’s most basic cars. Now they’re true luxuries on a performance car, increasingly only available to the wealthiest car enthusiasts looking for an analog buzz. The latest company to join that trend is startup Garagisti & Co, whose GP1 might just be your new favorite supercar.

Named after a disparaging term used against the small privateer upsetters from the 1950s and ’60s grand prix scene, this British company with major Italian DNA says it will build no more than 25 of its £2.45 million plus taxes ($3.3 million at current exchange rates) GP1s.

Analog Inside and Out

For that money you get carbon-bodied missile with one foot in the present and another very much in the past. Shaped by former Bugatti and Rimac designer Angel Guerra, the exterior is inspired by supercar and concept icons like Marcello Gandini’s Lancia Stratos Zero and Lamborghini Countach. The GP1 looks so good on its forged teledial wheels it would criminal to configure one with the alternative five-spoke rims.

In the mostly screen-free cabin the rising console reminds us of the Porsche Carrera GT’s and is home to a black shifter connected to an Xtrac six-speed manual transmission. That sends power to the rear wheels – power drawn from a 6.6-liter naturally-aspirated V12 developed by Italian motorsport and powertrain specialists Italtecnica.

The V12 spins to 9,000 rpm and generates 789 hp (800 PS) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. Not huge numbers by modern standards, but then neither is the one in the curb weight column. The GP1 is only 2,200 lbs (1,000 kg) dry, which makes it more than 40 percent lighter than a Lamborghini Reveuelto, another V12 supercar, but one weighed down by turbos and hybrid hardware.

A Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 is similarly light, seats three and its Cosworth V12 revs to an insane 11,500 rpm. But it’s less powerful – 654 hp/663 PS, 344 lb-ft/467 Nm – and much less attractive, at least to my eyes.

Garagisti & Co may be a newcomer, but with the GP1, it’s making a strong case for the continued relevance of purity over complexity.
