Mafia: The Old Country – First PC Performance & DLSS 4 Impressions

2K Games has released the next game in the Mafia series, called Mafia: The Old Country. This new game uses Unreal Engine 5. It also supports DLSS 4 with Multi-Frame Generation. Thus, I decided to try it out on our main gaming PC to see how well it runs and to share my first thoughts on its performance.

For these first benchmarks, I used an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32GB of DDR5 at 6000Mhz, the NVIDIA RTX 4090, and the RTX 5080. I also used Windows 10 64-bit, and the GeForce 580.88 driver.

Mafia: The Old Country does not have any built-in benchmark tool. So, for our tests, I used Don Torrisi’s villa. This appeared to be one of the most demanding areas early in the game. As such, it should give us a good idea of how the rest of it runs.

Let’s start with the NVIDIA RTX 4090. On Epic Settings, this GPU can drop below 60FPS even at 1080p. Yup, you read that right. One of NVIDIA’s most powerful GPUs is being brought to its knees even at 1080p. At 1440p/Epic Settings, we’re getting between 42FPS and 51FPS. As for Native 4K/Epic Settings, the NVIDIA RTX 4090 can push 31-39FPS.

Before continuing, I should note that the Epic Settings in this game are REALLY demanding. The good news is that you can drop the settings to High and gain a lot of performance. On High Settings, we were way above 60FPS at Native 1440p. At 4K with DLSS 4 Quality, we were also able to get over 60FPS at all times. Also, keep in mind that this is a stress test. Other areas will run better than this.

The NVIDIA RTX 5080 can push a minimum of 44FPS and an average of 55FPS at Native 1080p on Epic Settings. Things go downhill once you increase your resolution to 1440p and 4K. Even with DLSS 4 Quality, you cannot achieve 60FPS at 4K on Epic Settings. The only way to get to 60FPS at 4K/Epic Settings is with DLSS 4 Quality and Frame Gen.

As I said, Mafia: The Old Country supports Multi-Frame Gen. Sadly, though, it’s not as good here as it was in Doom: The Dark Ages or FBC: Firebreak. I took some screenshots while moving the camera around quickly, and you can clearly see numerous visual issues. The fourth screenshot, especially, looks really bad. You will also spot some strange artifacts in the subtitles. Overall, MFG needs a lot of improvement in this game.

Now, while MFG suffers from the visual issues I mentioned above, it does a great job at smoothing the game’s performance. At 4K/Epic Settings with DLSS 4 Quality and MFG X4, I was able to fully enjoy the game on the RTX 5080. Although the base framerate was low, I did not experience any major latency lag issues. This really caught me by surprise. This is one of the rare cases in which you won’t notice any latency lag while using MFG.

So, you’d assume the best experience right now is the DLSS 4 Quality and MFG, right? Well, we have some bad news for everyone who wants to use DLSS 4 Super Resolution. Sadly, the DLSS 4 SR implementation is bad in this title. Right now, TSR looks BETTER than DLSS. In our benchmark area, with DLSS 4, there was a lot of shimmering on the grass. With TSR, the image was more stable and looked sharper. There was also less aliasing in objects like plants and power cables, and distant buildings. This is the first time I’ve seen TSR beating DLSS 4. I’ve highlighted these issues in my video. I’ve also informed NVIDIA about this, so hopefully they’ll address it via a new driver or a new game patch.

Mafia: The Old Country also supports AMD FSR 3.1. But, the AMD FSR 3.1 Frame Gen option was not available on the NVIDIA RTX 5080. Here’s a screenshot. Perhaps the game automatically locks AMD FSR 3.1 Frame Gen on the RTX-50 series GPUs? I don’t know what’s going on here. All I know is that I can use DLSS 4 Frame Gen, but I cannot use AMD FSR 3.1 Frame Gen.

All in all, Mafia: The Old Country appears to be in a weird place right now. The Epic Settings are unusable for pretty much everyone at native resolutions. Yes, even if you own an RTX 5090. The only way to get over 60FPS on those settings is with DLSS 4 and Frame Gen. But, DLSS 4 and Multi-Frame Gen have numerous visual issues right now. So, the best way to game is with TSR (and you cannot use DLSS Frame Gen with TSR in this game).

The good news is that by dropping the settings to High, you can make the game run smoothly on numerous GPUs. Yes, you’ll get more pop-ins but this is the best way to play Mafia: The Old Country as of this moment. High Settings also look great as you can see in the following video. So, make sure to use them because the Epic Settings are only meant for the high-end GPUs (and that’s with DLSS and Frame Gen).

Our PC Performance Analysis will go live later this weekend. In that article, we’ll have benchmarks for numerous AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. So, stay tuned for more!
