Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson was crushed on a sack in the first quarter of Thursday’s preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens and suffered a dislocated pinkie finger on his right hand. The third-year pro has been ruled out for the rest of the game.
The Ravens blitzed, and the Colts didn’t adjust, which allowed Ravens linebacker David Ojabo to get a free rush on Richardson, who never saw him coming. After Ojabo took Richardson to the ground, the QB injured his pinkie finger. Richardson was attended to by trainers on the sideline and ultimately had the finger taped.
Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen told Colts.com reporter Larra Overton that he doesn’t yet know the extent of the injury.
“It was just a dislocation,” Steichen said. “Popped out, popped back in. Don’t know how long he’ll be out.”
While Richardson exited the game, he was later seen throwing on the sideline and has remained on the sidelines with his team throughout the game. Richardson told members of the media after the game that his finger is a little sore after being popped back into place, but that he would be fine. He added that he tried to go back into the game, but the team didn’t want him to.
On the play he got hurt on, Richardson said he was supposed to “throw hot” to the right side on the play he got hurt on. He added that he didn’t see the blitz coming, but that he knows what to fix next time.

Steichen said earlier this week that the plan for Thursday’s game was for Richardson to play the first quarter and half of the second before pivoting to Daniel Jones, whom Richardson is competing with for the QB1 spot. That plan was short-lived. Richardson finished his brief night 2-of-3 passing for 21 yards.
He was replaced by Jones, who completed 10-of-21 passes for 144 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Richardson has struggled to stay healthy throughout his first two NFL seasons. He’s missed 17 games due to injury since being drafted fourth overall by the Colts in 2023.

Richardson wasn’t the only injury in Thursday’s game.
The Ravens lost rookie cornerback Bilhal Kone for the season, also to a knee injury. Kone, a sixth-round pick out of Western Michigan, was carted off the field with his left leg in an air cast after his knee bent awkwardly on a pass breakup just outside the end zone. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh went out to check on Kone and was given a report by head athletic trainer Adrian Dixon. Harbaugh immediately put his hand on his face. He knelt down next to Kone as the medical officials put on the aircast and helped him onto the cart.
The Colts also announced after the game that rookie cornerback Justin Walley, who was on track to be a starter, was out for the season with a torn ACL. Walley suffered the injury in Tuesday’s joint practice with the Ravens.
