Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military School EDGE LaDamion Guyton is the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2027 Rivals Industry Ranking, and his recruitment took an unexpected — and major — turn this summer.
Following a multi-day visit to Texas Tech in June, the five-star prospect started thinking about committing to the Red Raiders. He almost committed on the visit, but held off — still making a much earlier decision than he expected.
“God doesn’t make mistakes,” Guyton told Rivals. “I didn’t think I’d commit this early either, but after talking with my mom, it just felt right. That visit showed me exactly what I needed to see.”
What did it show him? Why did Texas Tech land a commitment from the No. 1 prospect in the state of Georgia?
For Guyton, the decision wasn’t about the flash — it was about real connection.
“The best thing about the visit was just feeling at home,” he said. “I wanted to get away, try something new — and the people there made it easy. The people make me feel like family. You can tell what’s real and what’s fake, and they’re real at Texas Tech. It felt like family. Nothing weird, nothing forced — it is all natural with them.”
Texas Tech offered and pushed hard for Guyton
Texas Tech was a school that offered later in his recruitment, but that didn’t matter.
“As soon as they offered, they came strong,” Guyton said. “Coach CJ Ah You has been consistent — he treats me like one of his own. He’s got a plan for me, and a plan for his players. He’s really smart and I know he can help me a lot.”
Head coach Joey McGuire, defensive coordinator Shiel Wood, and general manager James Blanchard also made big impressions.
“Coach McGuire cares about his players — every coach there does. They have something going on. The energy in the program is real, and it’s growing.”
Schools are not going to give up on Guyton
Georgia will be in this to the end. South Carolina has always been in touch. Even with the commitment, Guyton plans to stay engaged with the process.
“I’ll still take some visits, and I’m always going to listen,” he said. “But once I pick a school, I zero in. I feel good about the commitment after the talks we have had, but I will go to games and take visits.”
He told Ah You initially he was going to hold off — but the momentum from the visit, combined with honest conversations with his inner circle, shifted everything.
“This has been on my mind since I left Lubbock. It just stayed with me.”
Guyton plans to return to Lubbock this fall for a game during his bye week. And while there’s been talk of reclassifying, he’s still weighing that option.
“It’s not an easy decision — we’re running out of time for that to happen, but we’ll see,” Guyton added. “Right now, I’m focused on what’s ahead and making the most of this season.”
Texas Tech landed one of the top players in the country — and did it by building trust, consistency, and genuine relationships. Guyton’s commitment is a huge win for the Red Raiders, and the story may just be getting started.
