Roman Anthony, Red Sox close on 8-year, $130 million contract extension: Source

The Boston Red Sox are nearing a deal with rookie outfielder Roman Anthony, MLB’s top prospect in Keith Law’s preseason rankings, to a long-term extension that could keep him with the team through 2034, sources confirmed to The Athletic on Wednesday.

Anthony’s deal, which is pending a physical, is for eight years and $130 million. It includes a club option for 2034.

The news was first reported by ESPN.

Anthony’s extension would be the third long-term deal chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has given a Red Sox player this season. Kristian Campbell signed an eight-year, $60 million deal in April the day after Garrett Crochet signed a six-year, $160 million deal.

Breslow has a history of signing players early in their careers, such as Ceddanne Rafaela, who signed an eight-year, $50 million deal at the start of 2024 after just 28 games played. Starter Brayan Bello signed a six-year, $55 million deal at the start of 2024 after just two seasons in the majors.

Anthony, 21, is in the running for American League Rookie of the Year after debuting on June 9. He has hit .283 with an .828 OPS, two homers and 15 doubles through 46 games.
