AMD Readies Two New 3D V-Cache Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” Desktop CPUs, 8 Core With 96 MB & 16 Core With 192 MB “Dual X3D”

AMD is reportedly preparing two brand new Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” 3D V-Cache desktop CPUs in 8 & 16-core flavors with up to 192 MB cache.

Is AMD Finally Going To Offer Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” 3D V-Cache Desktop CPUs With Dual X3D Dies? Rumor Alleges New 8-Core and 16-Core Variants

Based on new information provided by chi11eddog, it looks like AMD is all set to go big with its Ryzen 9000 “3D V-Cache” options based on the Zen 5 core architecture. The company already offers the 8-core Ryzen 7 9800X3D and the 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D, but based on the new report, it looks like two more models are in the works.

Starting with the first chip, we have a 16-core and 32-thread variant, which should be positioned in the Ryzen 9 stack. This chip is said to operate at 200W TDP and will feature 192 MB of cache.

For comparison, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D offers 16 cores, 32 threads, with a boost clock of up to 5.7 GHz at 170W and packs a total of 128 MB of L3 cache. This is achieved using one X3D-boosted CCD with 64 MB 3D V-Cache and 32 MB on-CCD cache, while the second CCD comes with the standard on-CCD 32 MB cache. But the newer 16-core variant is said to pack an additional 64 MB on the second die too, reaching up to 192 MB of cache, the highest ever on a mainstream desktop CPU.

If true, this will be the first time that we see a dual 3D V-Cache option in the AMD Ryzen CPU stack. There have been a couple of prototypes that have popped up every now and then, but nothing ever made it into retail. AMD has also recently refuted the possibility of Ryzen X3D CPUs with 3D V-Cache stacked on both dies, citing economic concerns as the main reason, but it looks like a niche might have been created for such CPUs to take shape for the retail segment.

It looks like this enthusiast-class chip will be priced above the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, which has an MSRP of $699 US. We can expect $799 or even higher for the dual X3D implementation, or if AMD wants, they can offer a price cut on the existing 9950X3D while the newer variant replaces it.

The second chip that AMD is working on is an 8-core and 16-thread variant with a 120W TDP and 96 MB of L3 cache. The specifications of this chip look very similar to the existing Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU. It can be a toned-down model that offers better value in the sub-$450 US range or a higher-clocked variant set at $499 US. This is going to be an interesting choice since users will now have multiple 3D V-Cache CPU options to select from.

AMD is also using its 2nd Gen AMD V-Cache technology across all of its brand-new “Zen 5” Ryzen 9000 Desktop CPUs. This new V-Cache design runs cooler, faster, and supports overclocking. It is possible that the new V-Cache design helped AMD to finally develop a proper “retail” dual-X3D chip.

Meanwhile, Intel might be working on its 3D V-Cache-like CPUs with the Nova Lake generation, offering bLLC “Big LLC” packages, but those aren’t coming anytime soon. So it looks like AMD’s dominance in the gaming segment will continue, while users who have waited for a proper dual X3D implementation will have a super high-end Ryzen CPU for their systems.
