NVIDIA has finally introduced their “Smooth Motion” technology with the RTX 40 series GPUs in the latest preview drivers, offering gamers an elevated experience.
NVIDIA’s Smooth Motion Technology Now Supported By RTX 40 GPUs, Bringing In a Massive Boost to FPS Count
The Smooth Motion technology is similar to AMD’s AFMF (Fluid Motion Frames) implementation. It generates an additional frame between two rendered frames, effectively doubling the perceived frame rate in games. Interestingly, it doesn’t need to be integrated into the game since it is a software-level implementation, so it works with titles that don’t support DLSS Frame Generation.
Now, it is reported that Smooth Motion has been introduced in NVIDIA’s latest 590.26 preview drivers, and it will now be supported with NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace GPUs, increasing the number of gamers that can access the technology.
NVIDIA’s RTX 40 users cannot enable Smooth Motion from the “NVIDIA App” right now, but apparently, according to Macer at Guru3D Forums, you can set the option enabled through the NVIDIA Profile Inspector tool, which is a decent workaround for now. According to the user’s testing, enabling Smooth Motion essentially increased the FPS from 82 to 164 at World of Warcraft, which means that a toggle button simply doubled them. However, since the driver is in preview stages, there are still inconsistencies being reported by the users, so we will recommend to wait for when the feature is officially available.
Smooth Motion is generally ideal for older applications that don’t support NVIDIA’s DLSS and is effective for CPU-limited scenarios or games locked to lower frame rates. However, the increase in FPS certainly doesn’t mean a parallel rise in visual quality, since Smooth Motion isn’t as complex as the DLSS integration, and there will be minor artifacts in some cases. But, for users looking to squeeze out the maximum FPS, Smooth Motion has just brought you a 2x increase.
