Browns star recruiting WR Terry McLaurin as trade rumors swirl, Commanders seem unlikely to make move

It was not that long ago that Washington Commanders WR Terry McLaurin was coming out of seemingly nowhere to put up 17 touchdowns in his final two seasons at The Ohio State University. Despite that, McLaurin fell into the third round of the 2019 NFL draft where he was selected by Washington.

Since then, McLaurin has had five seasons of over 1,000 yards receiving (having just missed the mark as a rookie with 919) despite the Commanders struggling as a team. Now, with QB Jayden Daniels in the fold, McLaurin would be set to take off. Except, trade rumors are the only thing really taking off.

According to multiple reports, McLaurin has requested a trade out of Washington:

As noted in our previous story on McLaurin potentially being available, Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry has been known to swing a trade for a receiver or three in his time in the position. Browns star CB Denzel Ward would love to reunite with his former Buckeyes teammate and took time to do some recruiting on social media:

Turning 30 early in the 2025 NFL season, McLaurin’s market could be interesting. How many teams are willing to trade draft capital to the Commanders and pay the wide receiver near top of the market money, around $33 million a year, with a new contract?

In many ways, the Browns do not seem to make sense for a McLaurin trade as they try to figure out who their quarterback is and seem to be resetting the roster to get younger and cheaper. On the other hand, McLaurin would join Jerry Jeudy, David Njoku and Cedric Tillman to give Cleveland a high-quality pass-catching group to help Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders or whoever they draft in the 2026 NFL draft to play quarterback.

Given Washington’s quick ascent into being a competitive team, any trade for McLaurin would have to include player(s) who could help right away, along with 2026 draft capital. Cleveland has the latter but could struggle to find a quality player or two they are willing to deal away for McLaurin, whether Ward wants a reunion or not.

Do you think the Browns should make a trade and sign McLaurin to a big deal? If so, what do you think they would have to move to make the deal happen?
