The New York Yankees have won the David Bednar sweepstakes.
The closer was acquired by the Yankees in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported on Thursday. The Yankees were one of several teams linked to Bednar, including the Texas Rangers.
MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported that top catching prospect Rafael Flores plus two other players are part of the return that will go to Pittsburgh.
Bednar is under team control for another year.
The 30-year-old had a rough start to the 2025 season and was optioned to Triple-A in April. But since his return to MLB, the right-hander has been a man on a mission. Through 37 innings, Bednar has a 1.70 ERA with a 5.5% walk rate.
Bednar joins a Yankees bullpen that includes Devin Williams and Luke Weaver, and can pitch in high-leverage situations when needed.
The Yankees are 59-49 going into Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays and are four games behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East.
